Port Hardy · Canada
The North Coast Trail on the northern tip of Vancouver Island runs 43 km between San Josef Bay and Shushartie Bay through old-growth Sitka spruce and western red cedar rainforest, with bear grass meadows, isolated sea stacks, and black sand beaches. The trail is genuinely challenging — muddy, rooted, and sometimes requiring rope-assisted descents — and accessible only by floatplane or water taxi. Black bears are common; cougars have been sighted. This is the Canadian coast at its most raw.
