Overview
The West African Sahel — the semi-arid transition zone from the Sahara to the savannas — stretches 5,400 km from Senegal to Chad and has been traversed by overlanders since the 1960s trans-Africa rallies. By 4WD from Dakar across Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and into Nigeria, the route passes Dogon cliff villages, Fulani cattle camps, and the ancient mud mosques of Djenné. Logistics are complex; political situations change; this is for experienced overland travellers.
