Overview
The Kanas Lake region in northern Xinjiang, on the border of Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan, contains some of the most pristine and least-visited boreal wilderness in Asia — Mongolian-style steppe, Siberian taiga forest, and the deep blue of Kanas Lake, which local Tuvan herders believe contains a sea monster. Trekking from Hemu village through the forests and over the passes requires Chinese permits and a guide; autumn colour in late September is extraordinary.
