Overview
The Gangotri to Gomukh trek follows the Bhagirathi River to its source at the Gangotri Glacier at 3,900 m — a 20 km route through the Garhwal Himalaya that is simultaneously a Hindu pilgrimage and a mountain wilderness trek. The glacier snout at Gomukh, from which the holy river emerges, is retreating visibly; scientists estimate 22 m per year. Continuing to Tapovan meadow above the glacier gives views of Shivling and Bhagirathi peaks.
