Overview
The Upper Mustang — the ancient kingdom of Lo on the Tibetan plateau north of Annapurna — was opened to trekking only in 1992 and remains heavily restricted (USD 500 permit for 10 days). The landscape is a high-altitude desert of wind-eroded red cliffs, centuries-old cave monasteries, whitewashed villages where Tibetan Buddhism survives in its pre-Chinese form, and the walled capital of Lo Manthang. The restricted permit keeps it genuinely remote.
