Overview
The Lost Coast of northern California is one of the few sections of the US Pacific Coast inaccessible by road — the terrain was too steep and the population too sparse for Highway 1 to penetrate. The 35 km King Range trail runs between Mattole Beach and Shelter Cove along a coastline of tidal rocks, sea stacks, black sand beaches, and old-growth Douglas fir forest. Timing is critical — the tidal flats impassable at high tide. Plan around the tidal tables.
