Running the Tour du Mont Blanc compresses the hikers' fortnight into five huge days: 170 km and roughly 10,000 m of climbing around the entire massif through France, Italy and Switzerland, on the same trails the UTMB race covers in a single night and day. Stages of 30-40 km link Chamonix, Les Contamines, Courmayeur, Rifugio Bonatti's balcony above Val Ferret and Champex-Lac, over cols — Bonhomme, Seigne, Grand Ferret — that each rearrange the massif's geometry behind you. Nothing is technical; everything is relentless. The trick that catches fit road runners is the descending — 10,000 m of quad-shredding downhill is what ends attempts, so train on descents and carry poles. Rifugio and gîte nights mean you run with a five-kilo vest rather than a pack, but beds must be booked months ahead for July and August. Early September is the connoisseur's slot: the UTMB circus has just left, the larches are turning gold and the refuges stay open into the third week. Around £2,000 covers half-board huts and valley transfers. Carry UTMB-style mandatory kit — waterproofs, warm layer, foil blanket — because 2,500 m cols manufacture their own weather in any month.
