Travelling the Amazon from Iquitos in Peru to Belém on the Atlantic coast of Brazil — 3,700 km on slow cargo boats and jungle lodges — is among the most immersive journeys on earth. Pink river dolphins surface alongside the boat, sloths hang from cecropia trees at the waterline, caimans glow in headtorch light, and the scale of the forest — 5.5 million sq km — reduces everything else to perspective. The slow boat from Leticia to Manaus takes 5–7 days; hammock space is cheap.
