Denali (6,190 m) is North America's highest peak and the West Buttress route is its standard line, taking climbers from the Kahiltna Glacier base camp through fixed camps at 4,335 m and 5,240 m to the summit ridge. The mountain is fully self-supported — teams haul sleds with food and fuel for 3 weeks. Cold reaches -50°C with windchill. The Alaska Range landscape is among the most otherworldly on the planet.
