Overview
The John Muir Trail runs 340 km from Yosemite Valley to the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States at 4,421 m. The route passes through the High Sierra — granite domes, sapphire lakes, and meadows carpeted with wildflowers — crossing 10 passes above 3,350 m. Bear canisters are required. Permits are a lottery nightmare; apply in February for summer travel.
