Overview

Žabljak is the highest town in the Balkans and a scruffy, useful base: cheap rooms, a good bakery, and three completely different days within an hour of it. First the Tara, the deepest canyon in Europe, rafted from Brštanovica down to Šćepan Polje through eighteen kilometres of green water and limestone walls that shut out the sky. Then Nevidio, the slot canyon on the Komarnica that nobody descended until 1965: a guided half day of abseils, jumps into black pools and squeezes where the walls close to shoulder width, open only once the snowmelt drops away. Finally Bobotov Kuk at 2,523 metres, a scrambly six-hour round trip from the Sedlo pass with the whole massif laid out at the top. Podgorica is about three hours by road and a hire car makes the week work. Book Nevidio well in advance: operators cap group sizes and cancel outright in high water, which is what most often reshuffles an itinerary here. By Alpine standards it is absurdly cheap - seven days with car, guesthouse, a rafting day and a guided canyon is roughly £850. Bring approach shoes with real grip; the limestone stays polished and wet.
