Voss Adventure Week

Overview

Voss calls itself the adventure capital of Norway and then spends all summer proving it. The town sits on a lake between Bergen and the fjords, and a five-day sampler runs the gamut: rafting the Raundalselvi's grade III–V snowmelt, paragliding from Hanguren above the lake, a canyoning day of slides and jumps in granite chutes, and — this being the home town of Norwegian skydiving — a tandem jump or a session in the wind tunnel where the national team trains. A finishing day kayaking the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord from Gudvangen, beneath kilometre-high walls, lands the point gently. The moment that stays is the Raundalselvi: glacier-cold water, big bouncing wave trains, and cliffs the road never reaches. The variable is water level — snowmelt peaks in June and rapids get portaged or upgraded with flow — and weather can cancel flying days, so keep the schedule loose. Everything books through operators in town, and the Bergen–Oslo railway stops literally in the middle of it (an hour from Bergen). Late June's Ekstremsportveko festival doubles the town's pulse if you can get a bed. Around £850 for hostel nights and four activity days.
