Overview

Moab is a small town with an outsized gravitational field: two national parks on its doorstep, a big brown river running through, and more slickrock than anywhere on Earth. The classic week stacks disciplines — a day on the Slickrock Trail's petrified sandstone dunes, where your tyres grip angles that feel impossible; the Whole Enchilada descent from alpine meadows at over 3,300m down to the Colorado River; a raft day through the red walls of Fisher Towers canyon; and a rope day canyoneering a sandstone slot, abseiling into cool shadow while the desert bakes above. Sunset belongs to Delicate Arch — walk up for the hour when the sandstone goes furnace-orange. The catch-out is heat and timing: June to August is punishing on exposed rock, the Whole Enchilada's top section only melts out from late May, and Arches now runs timed-entry reservations in peak season. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots. Fly into Grand Junction or drive four hours from Salt Lake City; a car matters here. Bike hire, shuttles, raft and canyoneering guides all book easily in town. Around £850–950 for the week with camping or a budget motel, hire bike and two guided days.
