Svaneti Ski Touring from Mestia

Overview

Svaneti is the Caucasus at its most cinematic: medieval stone towers rising out of Mestia's snowbanks, and above them 4,000m walls — Ushba's double horn chief among them — that make the Alps look domesticated. You use the Tetnuldi and Hatsvali lifts as springboards, then skin into empty valleys where the only tracks are yours and a fox's. Days are long but the vertical is honest: 1,000–1,400m tours to cols facing Ushba, descents through birch glades back to the road, and one big day out towards Ushguli, the towered village at 2,100m that claims to be Europe's highest permanently inhabited place. Snow here is continental and can hide persistent weak layers, so a local IFMGA guide is non-negotiable — happily they cost a fraction of Alpine rates. Fly to Tbilisi or Kutaisi, then take the long, spectacular road up from Zugdidi (four hours; storms occasionally close it — build in a buffer day). Guesthouses in Mestia serve khachapuri-heavy dinners for a few pounds. About £1,400 for eight days with guiding, half board and transfers.
