Cabot Trail Autumn Loop

Overview

The Cabot Trail loops 298 km around the top of Cape Breton Island, riding the plateau edge of Cape Breton Highlands National Park where the road hairpins down French Mountain and MacKenzie Mountain with the Gulf of St Lawrence glittering below. In early October the hardwood forests turn scarlet and gold, and the drive becomes one of the great autumn journeys anywhere. The moment is the Skyline Trail at dusk: a boardwalk out along a headland ridge, moose in the scrub, whales — pilots and minkes — breaking the surface far below as the sun drops into the gulf. Pull in at Pleasant Bay for a whale-watching zodiac, swim at Ingonish's beaches, and finish with a ceilidh and chowder in Baddeck. Locals argue about direction; clockwise puts you in the outside lane for the west-coast descents, which is the view. The variable is timing: the Celtic Colours festival in October fills every room on the island, so book months out or come in September. Fly into Halifax, four hours' drive from the trailhead.
