Trollstigen, Geiranger and the Atlantic Road

Overview

Fjord Norway compresses its three most celebrated stretches of road into one six-day loop from the art-nouveau port of Ålesund: the Trollstigen's eleven hairpins, the eagle's-eye descent into Geirangerfjord, and the wave-lashed bridges of the Atlantic Ocean Road. Climb the Trollstigen under the mile-high face of the Trollveggen and walk out onto the cantilevered viewpoint hanging over the bends you have just driven. Cross the Gudbrandsjuvet gorge, then drop the Ørnevegen's switchbacks to Geiranger, where the ferry to Hellesylt sails past the Seven Sisters falls — do it as a car ferry leg, it is the cheapest fjord cruise in Norway. Finish north on the Atlanterhavsveien, where the Storseisundet bridge corkscrews over the skerries; in a westerly swell the sea explodes across the road, and that is the photograph. The variables: the Trollstigen opens around late May and has closed for long spells in recent seasons for rockfall protection work — check Statens vegvesen's status before committing the loop; and Norwegian prices make the £1,200 per person budget for six days of guesthouses, ferries and fuel an honest floor, not a ceiling.
