Overview

The Blue Ridge Parkway unspools for 469 miles along the Appalachian crest from Rockfish Gap in Virginia to the edge of the Great Smokies at Cherokee, North Carolina — no lorries, no billboards, and a 45 mph limit that turns driving back into a pleasure. The ridge-top overlooks stack blue on blue to the horizon, and the moment that sells it is dawn at Craggy Gardens in June when the rhododendron balds are in full purple flower. Break the miles at Mabry Mill's photogenic waterwheel, the Linn Cove Viaduct curling around Grandfather Mountain, and Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. Asheville sits just off the parkway at the southern end and makes the natural food-and-breweries stopover. The variable is weather: the parkway lives in cloud, and fog can shut the views (and occasionally the road) for a day at a time, while October leaf season brings the year's thickest traffic. Sections close in winter with no snow clearance. A week one-way with B&B stops runs about £1,100 per person; pick up a car in Washington DC or Charlotte.
