Fifty miles of engineering audacity carved into Montana's Lewis Range, Going-to-the-Sun Road climbs from the cedar shores of Lake McDonald over 2,026 m Logan Pass and drops to St Mary Lake, clinging to cliff faces behind low stone parapets the whole way. The moment is pulling over at Big Bend as morning light rakes the Weeping Wall and mountain goats amble along the tarmac as if they built it. From Logan Pass, walk a stretch of the Highline Trail along the Garden Wall before descending for huckleberry ice cream in Apgar, and give a day to Many Glacier's grizzly country on the east side. The variables catch everyone: the alpine section rarely opens fully before late June and closes by mid-October; Glacier's timed-entry vehicle reservations sell out within minutes of release; and the Logan Pass car park fills by 8am, so start at dawn or ride the shuttle. Access towns are Whitefish and Kalispell. Four days gives you both sides of the park for about £700 per person in lodges and hire car — more if you snag a seat in a vintage red Jammer bus.
