Overview

Makalu, the world's fifth-highest peak at 8,485 m, sits in a seldom-visited corner of eastern Nepal, offering one of the most pristine and challenging trek approaches in the Himalaya. The trail climbs through subtropical forest, rhododendron groves, and high-alpine meadows carpeted with gentians to reach Base Camp at 5,700 m — with jaw-dropping views of Makalu's pyramidal summit and the Barun Glacier. Far fewer trekkers than the Everest or Annapurna circuits means genuine wilderness and authentic encounters with Sherpa communities.
