Muztagh Ata: Father of Ice Mountains

Overview

Muztagh Ata, 7,546 m, is the great white whale of the eastern Pamirs — a mountain so vast and so smoothly angled that expeditions climb it on skis. From Lake Karakul on the Karakoram Highway it looks like a single tilted snowfield propped against the Xinjiang sky, and that is essentially what the west ridge route is: forty degrees at its steepest, crevassed in patches, and utterly relentless for three vertical kilometres. Camels carry loads from the Subashi grasslands to base camp at 4,400 m, where Kyrgyz herders sell yoghurt to acclimatising climbers. Three camps ladder the ridge — 5,400 m, 6,200 m and 6,900 m — and most teams make two full rotations before a summit push. On skis the descent is the reward of a lifetime: 2,500 m of turns off a 7,500 m peak. On foot the endless summit plateau extracts the price; whiteouts demand GPS discipline. Expeditions stage through Kashgar, the old Silk Road city, with Chinese permits arranged by the operator — allow months for paperwork. The season is June to August; full-service trips run £5,500 to £7,500 over about four weeks. It may be the technically easiest 7,500er on Earth, but the altitude is real: treat it as a full expedition.
