From the summit ridge of Lobuche East, the entire Everest massif arranges itself for you: Nuptse's fluted wall, the black pyramid of Everest behind it, Pumori, Cholatse and a hundred unnamed spires floating above the Khumbu Glacier. At 6,119 m, this is the connoisseur's trekking peak — harder and quieter than Island Peak, with a summit day that is a real alpine climb rather than a queue. The route leaves the yak pastures above Lobuche village for a rocky high camp at 5,400 m, then climbs slabby ledges by headtorch to the glacier. Fixed ropes protect several steep snow-and-ice steps of 45 degrees or more before the crest narrows to the airy final ridge. Many itineraries stop at the false summit; the true top depends on cornice conditions and whether your operator fixes the last section — ask before you book. Most trips run 17 to 19 days from Kathmandu, acclimatising along the Everest Base Camp trail before doubling back to climb. That rhythm works beautifully: you arrive at high camp already adapted. Budget £2,300 to £2,800 including the NMA permit, flights to Lukla and full climbing support. Solid crampon footwork and abseil competence are expected on summit day.
