Eiger by the Mittellegi Ridge

Overview

The journey to the climb is like nothing else in the Alps: you ride the Jungfrau railway into the mountain, step off at Eismeer station inside the Eiger, and exit through a tunnel window onto the glacier. An afternoon's climbing later you are at the Mittellegi Hut, a wooden eyrie bolted to the ridge at 3,355 m, watching evening light run along the crest you will climb at dawn. The Mittellegi Ridge is the Eiger's proudest reasonable line — a mile of exposed knife-edge rising to the 3,967 m summit, with fixed ropes up the steepest towers and the North Face dropping 1,800 m beneath your left boot. It is climbing you feel in your stomach: never desperate, never casual. The descent continues down the south ridge and across the Eigerjöcher to the Mönchsjoch hut — a complete crossing of the mountain. This is guide's terrain: Grindelwald bureaux pair you 1:1 and climb with you beforehand to check pace — the catch is speed, for slow parties meet afternoon storms on a ridge with no exits. You need solid rock skills (alpine III+), crampon competence and a very good head. Two days, roughly £2,000 with guide, huts and trains, late July to September when the ridge is dry. Worth every franc.
