Overview

Antarctica's highest mountain rises from ice that stretches unbroken to the horizon in every direction. Mount Vinson, 4,892 m, sits in the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains, 1,200 km from the South Pole, and climbing it is as much polar expedition as ascent: 24-hour daylight, -35C, and silence so complete you hear your heartbeat. An Ilyushin flies from Punta Arenas to the blue-ice runway at Union Glacier; a ski aircraft hops on to base camp on the Branscomb Glacier at 2,100 m. The route itself is straightforward mountaineering — sledge-hauling to Low Camp, a 1,200 m fixed-line headwall to High Camp at 3,780 m, then a long, bitterly cold summit day along the ridge with the Ellsworths' shark-fin peaks breaking the ice sheet below. Weather rules everything: storms pin teams in tents for days, so check how much slack your itinerary carries. The season is December to January.
