Tiger Beach Shark Liveaboard, Grand Bahama

Overview

Tiger Beach is a sunlit sandbank northwest of Grand Bahama's West End where six metres of gin-clear water host the Atlantic's most reliable tiger shark encounters. You kneel in a briefed line on white sand while three-to-four-metre tigers glide over your shoulder, lemon sharks grin from the edges and, from December to March, great hammerheads sweep in with dorsal fins like sails. The Bahamas banned commercial shark fishing in 2011 and built the world's most valuable shark-diving economy instead; the animals here are the dividend. The skills are simple — shallow, still, no current to speak of — but the protocol is not optional: dark gloves, hands tucked, no white fins, eyes on your sector. Listen to the crew and the dives feel remarkably calm; freelance and you will be sat out. Liveaboards cross from West Palm Beach, Florida, or day boats run from Freeport. October to March is prime, pairing tigers with hammerheads. A week aboard runs about £2,500 before flights; bring a dark 3mm suit and double the memory cards you think you need.
