Overview

Bikini is the far end of wreck diving: a nuclear ghost fleet in a lagoon that absorbed 23 atomic tests, reached by a handful of liveaboard departures a year via Kwajalein. The USS Saratoga — a 270-metre aircraft carrier — sits upright with her flight deck at 27 metres and Helldivers still in the hangar. Nearby lies HIJMS Nagato, the flagship that transmitted the Pearl Harbor attack order, capsized on her enormous guns; then the Arkansas, the Carlisle, the submarine Apogon. Every dive is a history lesson with a decompression obligation. This is a technical expedition, plainly stated. Operators require normoxic trimix or equivalent training; most dives sit in the 45-55 metre band with runtimes past ninety minutes. Residual radiation is negligible for divers — the constraint is your certification, not the physics. The season runs May to October. Twelve days costs roughly £9,500 before the multi-leg flights through Honolulu and Majuro, and island schedules slip, so build slack into your tickets. Sharks own the lagoon again; you will likely have the entire atoll to yourselves.
